ORJAN NILSEN
Circus Disco
January 21st, 2012
Man, oh, man, does it feel GOOD to go to a decent trance show. I’ve been attending a lot of shows down in OC lately, & what I’ve noticed is that the DJ’s tend to play more electro house rather than trance (with the exception of Cosmic Gate, who stay true to their Wake Your Mind album for their WYM Tour). This was my first time going to an event in LA in a while, & I can’t tell you what a difference it makes, especially attending trance night @ Circus. I wasn’t originally going to this event, but the driving force behind the decision to purchase a ticket was my resolution to go see DJ’s I haven’t seen live yet, & I do not regret it at all. Although my ears were ringing for hours after we left, I loved going to an actual trance show & trancing out with my trance pants on with my trance family (used “trance” four times in that sentence, BOOM!). The only song I could actually ID for Orjan was his remix of Cosmic Gate’s “Be Your Sound,” which was an epic song to hear, even though he dropped in pretty early, about half an hour into his set. I can’t wait to return to Circus next week for trancegasms galore all over again. :)
MARKUS SCHULZ
Sutra OC

Even though I made a New Year’s resolution to try & see DJ’s I haven’t seen live yet, Markus Schulz is a very fitting DJ to break my resolution with haha. You know me, I never pass up the chance to go see Markoose live, because he is my absolute favorite DJ to see live. His energy level is amazing, & it always makes the night so much better because he is so in tune with the vibes of his audience (I adore the way he dances while he DJ’s). I wish I could tell you that I remember the tracks that he played, but to be honest, I actually can only remember one track, which is “Rotunda.” All I have to say that it was so nice to go to a trance show again, but I wish he played less electro & more of his usual hard trance style.
GEORGE ACOSTA
Sutra OC

Finally, I got around to seeing George Acosta, a DJ I’ve wanted to see since very early into my EDM career since one of the first trance songs I listened to was “Beautiful.” I’ve missed two of his shows when he came through So Cal, once at Circus Hollywood & once at Ten Nightclub. When I heard that he was coming to Sutra, a venue that I grace my presence with on the regular, I knew I had to go see him there. I was even more excited since he released his album “Vision Behind Expressions,” but I might have built it up in my head too much because I was a bit disappointed by his set. He didn’t play any of the tracks that I wanted to hear off that album, & mostly stuck to playing electro for the first half & ended with some hard trance, nothing like the progressive trance his entire album is. I went to the show expecting pretty trance, but instead got a show tailored towards the usual bro’d out crowd, so I can’t blame him since the usual trance-loving crowd wasn’t there (where were you, Trance Family?!). Maybe I’ll give him another chance down the road since I’m still wanting to hear “Love Rain Down” & “Beautiful” live.
